tip

Keywords: body, movement

Pronunciation (IPA): tip
Part of Speech: term verb noun
Class: skurun
Forms: tip, tipys
Glosses: blink, wink, flick, flash

Description:

The term 'tip' comes from Old Common and has the base meaning of blink or wink, but it's used quite often to describe any kind of flicking motion or anything you need to watch carefully to see because it happens fast.

Noun:

As a noun, 'tip' refers to a blink or a wink, or metaphorically to a flick or a flash of something. The unambiguously say blink you would say 'ny tip nyr zeul' and to say wink you would say 'ny tip ny zeul' or even 'ny tip ny ate zeul' for emphasis. Usually, however, it is clear from context

Verb:

'Tip' is a skurun verb meaning to blink or flick or flash something that is often not specified.

When it comes to blinking and winking in the literal sense as we would mean in English, there are a couple of particular idioms. People usually use the antipassive for (generally unconscious) blinking of both eyes, so 'se tip u nar zeul' and the regular 'te tip y zeul' for a wink. These are generally shortened to 'se tip' and 'te tip' for blinking and winking the eyes, so it looks like an irregular usage, but it comes from a rational source.

Modifier:

The modifier form 'tipys' means having a blinking or flicking it flashing quality, something that comes and goes very quickly that you have to watch for
