Pronunciation (IPA): snap
Part of Speech: term noun verb
Class: happat
Forms: snap
Glosses: pic, picture, photo, snap (photo), photograph, image, share (an image online)

Description:

Snap is part of a set of three main terms in Common dealing with images, the others being 'trima' and 'foto'. Foto is a loanword from English.

Snap was borrowed from internet slang, and is the most changed from its origins of the three main terms for images in Common. It is significantly ameliorated from its origins and is not considered slangy today.

In modern Common, 'snap' refers specifically to digital images. It only edges into the territory of trima when those images lean towards being abstract or artistic, but using 'snap' for that is slightly demeaning. Snap and foto have quite a lot of overlap online as long as the image is of somethig literal and real, but for a digital image, 'snap' is at least as likely to be used. Digital images such as those used in the visual elements of a web page are exclusively likely to be called snaps.

Noun:

As a noun, 'snap' refers mainly to a digital image of any kind. It can include faithful representations which could also be called 'foto' or abstract or created images that could be called 'trima'.

Verb:

As a verb, 'snap' is a ditransitive happat verb meaning to transmit or post an image via the internet. It takes an ergative photographer, an absolute subject, and a dative recipient or forum. The disintentive skurun form can be used as a synonym for 'foto', although in that case it is usually understood that what the photographer is after is a shareable digital image.
